Obituary

Sybil Arlene Wakefield, a beloved teacher, musician, and community member, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024, just three days shy of her 99th birthday. Born on December 2, 1925, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Pearl Curtis Stephens and Millard Stephens, Sybil grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, alongside her two younger brothers, Sheldon and Millard, and her Uncle Carl.

In 1949, Sybil moved to Smith River, California, where she began her teaching career at Smith River School. Two years later, in 1951, she married Bob Wakefield, with whom she shared a loving marriage and built a beautiful family. Together, they raised five children: Sarah, Steve, Doug, Rob, and Martha. Sybil’s legacy continues through her 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Sybil dedicated 35 years to teaching at both Smith River School and Joe Hamilton School, shaping the lives of countless students. An accomplished musician, Sybil played with the Wild Rivers Symphony, and tirelessly supported the Youth Orchestra. She was also a cherished private instructor of violin, viola, cello, and piano, sharing her love of music with hundreds of local children and adults.

Beyond music, Sybil’s vibrant personality shone through her love of folk dancing, which she enthusiastically taught to a local group for several years. She was also deeply involved in the family businesses, Wakefield’s and Northwoods Restaurants, contributing her warmth and energy to the community.

Sybil will be remembered for her boundless generosity, her passion for teaching and music, and her unwavering devotion to family and community. Her impact will resonate for generations to come.

A celebration of Sybil’s remarkable life will be held at Crescent City Fire Department at 5th and I Streets on Saturday, Dec 14th from 1:00 - 3:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sybil’s honor to the Sybil Wakefield Memorial Foundation at Wild Rivers/Humboldt Area Foundation to benefit youth, seniors and her love of the arts. Contributions can be made online to hafoundation.org/sybilwakefield , or mailed to Humboldt Area Foundation 363 Indianola Rd, Bayside, CA 95524 or dropped at the Wild Rivers Foundation, 990 Front Street, Crescent City, CA
